| Gather tools and materials |
2 mirror pieces: 1-4x4x1/4 and 1-2x2x1/8
(any other sizes may be used, the procedure is the same). Pencil with
eraser, pocket knife, super glue, 6" ruller or straight edge,
permanent marker. Note: Edges of mirrors should already be sanded.
CAUTION: Be careful when cutting mirrors to avoid cuts on sharp edges! |
To have all equipment and supplies ready
for signal mirror project. |
| Mark location of sighting holes |
Make an "X" with the pencil in
the center of each mirror by laying the ruler or straight edge diagonally
across opposing corners. |
To locate center of mirrors. |
| Remove coating from back side of mirror. |
With a rotating motion, scratch through
the coating on the back side of mirror with a pocket knife or razor
blade. |
To make a small pin-hole to sight through.
(BE CAREFUL OF SHARP BLADE!) |
| Clean sighting hole. |
Rub across hole with pencil eraser - make
sure it is clean. |
To remove residue. |
| Sight hole alignment |
Lay mirrors back-to-back and check hole
size and clearness. The smaller the hole the better - about the size
of a pin head. |
Changes cannot be made after gluing. |
| Apply glue |
With large mirror face down, run a small
bead of super glue in a continuous loop, half way from center to outside
edges. |
To keep glue away from edges and sighting
hole. (EYE IRRITANT. BONDS SKIN INSTANTLY. READ CAUSION ON CONTAINER!) |
| Glue mirrors together |
Hold large mirror reflecting-side down
and small mirror reflecting-side up. Place one edge of small mirror
on top of large mirror and with a hinging motion, look down through
the sighting holes as you slowly rotate the pieces together. Hold
for 30 seconds. |
To bond mirrors together. |
You must be able to manage a number of things at once. Though it may
seem complex at first, with practice & use, it becomes "second
nature" and a valuable resource in your ability.... to survive.
- Look though the hole at your target.
- Find the "dot" in the back mirror (usually on your hand,
face, or shirt).
- While looking at your target, arrange the mirror such that the "dot"
crosses back & forth over the hole.
